Veterans Day is celebrated on Nov. 11. The day that honors those who served began in 1919 as Armistice Day. Veterans Day marks Nov. 11, 1918, as the date — the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month — when fighting ceased and World War I ended. The Treaty of Versailles was signed on June 28, 1919, according to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
